At university i found I really enjoyed microbiology and that made me work hard and be really good at my exams. So, i decided I wanted to have a job doing something I enjoyed, so I decided that I wanted to be a microbiologist!

I found the Microbiology practical classes the most fun. We did really fun experiments where we had samples of food and bodily fluids (that’s me being polite but what I really mean is blood, wee and poo) and we had to try and identify the bacteria in the samples. We also did experiments which demonstrated how fast a virus/bacteria can be spread simply by shaking hands. I found this fascinating and so I decided to stick with it!

Because I went through school and found photosynthesis so boring! Every biology lesson was about photosynthesis so by the time I got to college I loved to learn about the body and diseases which lead me to study microbiology!

I got into a rabbit hole on wikipedia when I was in school/college. I opened lots of pages on microbes and just kept clicking and reading into lots of different microbes. After that, I absolutely loved everything microbiology related and decided to apply for a microbiology degree, loved every minute of that and am now doing a PhD which I love (but sometimes hate)

I never knew which area of biology to focus on, I liked all of it!

So I got into microbiology in a really random way. I started off studying Zoology as I love animals and learning about how they live their lives. This lead me onto studying cows and how their digestive systems work. Turns out cows have lots of bacteria and microbes in their stomachs that help with the digestion of food. So I then became really interested in how these bacteria work, so started studying these. 🙂
