I love that bacteria can grow from single, individual cells to huge colonies in the lab. Likewise, when they infect us, bacteria like Mycobacterium tuberculosis (the cause of TB) can infect us and make us really ill from as little as just 5 bacterial cells, whereas with other bacteria you need thousands of them to make you ill

What I love about microbiology is learning about all the different bacteria and viruses that can make you very sick. I love learning about how they all work, some produce horrible toxins and some are invasive and spread in the body.

I am working with a bacteria called C. difficile and I am looking at how to kill this bacteria without using antibiotics (because antibiotics aren’t working so well any more) so I am using viruses called bacteriophages (viruses that attack bacteria) as a possible treatment.

If you don’t want to be a doctor (a medical doctor) then in my opinion a close second is a microbiologist as they play a huge part in studying the bacteria and then finding the cures and the best treatments in the lab. So you’re still helping people but indirectly

I love how microbiology is a whole hidden world just waiting to be discovered. And microbes are so important! There’s twices as many microbe cells in our bodies than human cells.

Microorganisms can do many things other life forms can’t, and as well as causing disease they can also help mankind. Which I think is amazing.

Learning more about the cool things bacteria can do. There is always more to discover and bacteria are so much more clever than we think!

I like the fact that bacteria and other microbes were some of the first living things to live on earth billions of years ago and they’re still here today!
From a single bacterium and cells whole creatures evolved and were made, dinosaurs for example. They changed the planet from a wasteland with no oxygen and burning skies into a beautiful place we all live in today with trees, animals, fish and people all able to survive! Not only did bacteria live before us they will live long after were all gone in another billion years and the other amazing thing is because we know this and we know they lived in all the conditions they have that when we look into the stars for ‘alien life’ and other planets the first thing we now look for isn’t ET its traces or evidence of microbiology!

      I am not a microbiologist.. 🙂
      Just a simple biologist…
