      Grinding soil.
To study organisms which live in soils, you have to understand their habitat : Soil.
Or to study soil you have to do a lot of analyses that require dry and finely grind soil. I have been grinding kilo and kilo of soil since the beginning of my PhD, not the funniest par, believe me.

Some bacteria really really smell bad! Having to work with those before lunch is not fun!

As always in science you have to make sure you are working correctly. Therefore there is always lots of health and safety aspects. This is often time consuming and a bit boring, but it is an absolute necessity!

When you are so sure something is going to work and it doesn’t….I don’t like that bit. But I throw a mini strop, eat some chocolate and then try again 🙂

Washing up!! It might sound silly, but when you are working in the lab you have to use lots of beakers and measuring cylinders etc (called glassware) that all has to be super clean and sterile to stop contamination happening. It’s such a pain after a long day in the lab when you think you have finished and there’s a pile of washing up to do. WORST. CHORE. EVER.

      haha 🙂
