• Question: if we were to transport algae to mars and use the ice caps as a water source, could we potentially start to oxygenate mars using it? even though they may not produce a lot of oxygen, do you think they may create enough to support 5 people so they could plant trees to finish of the habitation?

Wow, this is a very good question. If I am totally honest I really have no idea whether this would be possible! The theory is great though.

You sound like you have really thought this through 🙂 If I’m being completely honest, I really don’t know. But, this sounds like a theory you could work on testing out yourself if you decide to become a scientist

Another fantastic question from you! I’m not sure either but what I will say is the temperature on Mars is extremely cold most of the time so there will have to be a certain type of tree that can withstand the temperatures and conditions.

What a cracking question! Your theory is a good one and could potentially work, I think that the water source and algae would produce oxygen but they would not survive on mars alone! Think about what else is needed on this planet for life to live? How does the oxygen we breath stay on the earth? We have an atmosphere that holds it all in our gasses whereas Mars’ atmosphere is very thin and allows gasses (mainly poisonous carbon dioxide) to escape. So we would need an atmosphere as well as the algae and water…..what else do you think you would need?
