Favourite thing to do in my job: Be nosey and never stop learning about really cool things.
I'm Aaron, a first year PhD student at the University of Leeds looking how we can generate energy from grass. As well as science I really enjoy being in the countryside, SCUBA diving, EATING and looking after or learning about animals.
My work looks at taking grass clippings from areas such as parks and sports fields and generating energy (heat and electricity) from it. This is done through anaerobic digestion - basically a fancy way of saying the grass is fed to microorganisms (like bacteria), they eat it and then produce (Fart) a smelly gas called Methane. Methane can then be collected and burnt to generate energy.
My Typical Day
Every single day is different! I could be reading books to try and understand something, running a new experiment in the laboratory, or even visiting football grounds and farms to collect grass samples.
What I'd do with the prize money
I'd put the money to developing my own outreach project I could bring around schools to explain this technology to people who might not have heard of it! I would buy the materials to make some really fun, interactive posters and games (which would contain slime!) As well as a model of a cow to help explain how my work is very closely linked to what happens in a cows stomach.

What was your favourite subject at school?
Biology was always my favourite.
What did you want to be after you left school?
I had absolutely no idea... but I knew I wanted to do something science related.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Not in massive trouble, but nobody is perfect.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
Who is your favourite singer or band?
What's your favourite food?
What is the most fun thing you've done?
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
1. To live in a really cool country when I have finished my PhD, somewhere like New Zealand, or Canada. 2. To own 2 really cute Golden Retriever Dogs called Dennis and Frank. 3. To one day become a SCUBA diving master.
Tell us a joke.
